Casco Viejo has one of the best bar scenes in Central America — not because it's the largest or loudest, but because it combines genuine quality with an extraordinary setting. You are drinking in 350-year-old colonial buildings, on rooftops overlooking the bay, in cobblestone courtyards that have seen Spanish governors and French engineers and Panamanian independence fighters. The atmosphere is not manufactured.
The bars cluster around Avenida B, Plaza Bolívar, and Plaza de Francia. Most open around 4–5pm; the neighbourhood reaches peak bar energy around 8–10pm on Thursday through Saturday. For a deeper dive into the nightlife scene, see our nightlife guide. Here we focus on the bars specifically worth drinking in.
Rooftop bars — start here
Tantalo Rooftop
Avenida B · The neighbourhood benchmark
Rooftop
The most famous bar in Casco Viejo and, across most metrics, still the best. Tantalo is a hotel, restaurant, and rooftop bar that commands views of both the historic rooftops below and the gleaming financial district skyline across the bay. The cocktail menu is serious — expect creative interpretations of Panamanian spirits including seco and Ron Abuelo. DJ sets Thursday through Saturday from 8pm.
Arrive before 6pm on weekends to guarantee a table. The crowd is cosmopolitan — a mix of international travellers, expats, and affluent locals. Not the cheapest option but worth it for the setting.
Opens 4pm daily
Best night Fri & Sat
Cocktails from $10–14
Vibe Lively, mixed, view-focused
Ego y Narciso
Calle 3ra Este · Best bay views
Rooftop
Slightly less well-known than Tantalo, and better for it. Ego y Narciso sits directly above the bay with unobstructed views toward the Pacific and the Bridge of the Americas. Tiered terrace seating means most tables have excellent sightlines. The cocktail list leans toward clean, ingredient-led drinks — fewer pyrotechnics than Tantalo, more precision. The better choice for couples and small groups who want conversation over spectacle.
Opens 5pm daily
Best time Sunset (5:30–7pm)
Cocktails from $9–13
Vibe Relaxed, romantic, intimate
Craft cocktail bars
Relic Bar
Calle 1ra · Serious cocktails, local following
Cocktail
A small, low-key cocktail bar that has developed a genuine local following among bartenders and drinks enthusiasts across Panama City. The team behind Relic takes craft cocktails seriously — seasonal ingredients, house-made syrups, and an intelligent use of Panamanian base spirits. No DJ, no dance floor. This is where you go when you want an expertly made drink and good conversation. One of the most underrated bars in the neighbourhood.
Opens 6pm daily
Closes 2am most nights
Cocktails from $8–12
Vibe Quiet, craft-focused, local
Casa Sucre
Avenida A · Colonial house bar
Cocktail
A beautifully restored colonial mansion turned bar and restaurant, with an interior courtyard that is one of the most atmospheric drinking spaces in all of Panama City. The bar programme leans on tropical fruit, herbs, and local spirits — drinks that taste like they belong to the place. Best visited mid-evening (7–9pm) when the courtyard fills with conversation and candlelight. The food menu is excellent too.
Opens 5pm Tue–Sun
Cocktails from $9–13
Vibe Atmospheric, beautiful interior
Wine bars
Jazz Café Casco
Avenida Central · Wine, jazz, small plates
Wine / Jazz
The best wine list in Casco Viejo paired with a consistent live jazz programme — mostly Panamanian and visiting musicians, most evenings from around 8pm. The room is small, the acoustics are good, and the atmosphere is genuinely grown-up. No cover charge. An excellent alternative to the louder rooftop bars for those who prefer something more contemplative with their drink.
Opens 6pm Tue–Sun
Live music Most evenings from 8pm

Vibe Sophisticated, quiet, musical
Local and neighbourhood bars
El Patio de los Caballeros
Near Plaza Bolívar · Courtyard bar, local crowd
Local
A tucked-away courtyard bar that attracts a mostly local clientele — young Panamanian professionals, neighbourhood residents, and the occasional clued-in tourist. Cold beer, seco cocktails, affordable prices, and an atmosphere that feels authentically Panamanian rather than constructed for visitors. The kind of place you'd come back to on your third night once you know the neighbourhood. Ask your walking tour guide for the exact location.
Opens 5pm daily
Beer from $2.50
Vibe Local, casual, unpretentious
Bar crawl route: Start at Ego y Narciso for sunset drinks (5:30pm) → walk to Relic for a craft cocktail (7:30pm) → dinner at Casa Sucre courtyard (8:30pm) → Tantalo rooftop for a nightcap (10pm). This covers the neighbourhood's full bar range in a single evening and takes in three very different atmospheres.
Tips for drinking in Casco Viejo
Arrive early at rooftops. Tantalo and Ego y Narciso both fill quickly on Fridays and Saturdays. Get there before 6pm or expect to wait for a table.
Try Panamanian spirits. Ask any good bartender for a drink made with seco or Ron Abuelo — you'll taste something genuinely Panamanian that you can't easily get anywhere else.
Thursday is the local night. Locals tend to go out on Thursdays. For a more authentic crowd and less tourist energy, Thursday evening is the move.
Dress code: Smart casual at rooftops on weekends. Flip-flops and beach shorts may be turned away at Tantalo after 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
Go home by Uber. Do not walk beyond the core neighbourhood after midnight. Uber and InDriver are reliable until late.
