Casco Viejo Nightlife — Bars, Live Music & Late Nights

By Casco Viejo Tours  ·  7 min read

The Casco Viejo nightlife scene

Casco Viejo is Panama City's most interesting neighbourhood after dark. It is a genuine mix — locals celebrating quinceañeras spill out of courtyards next to international tourists on rooftop bars next to young Panamanian professionals at wine bars. Unlike the sanitised nightlife of the financial district, Casco Viejo after dark feels like a living city.

The neighbourhood is compact and almost entirely walkable. A well-planned night here can move you through three or four very different types of venue — rooftop cocktails at sunset, live cumbia in a colonial courtyard, a late dinner, and dancing — all within a few blocks. Thursday through Saturday are the busiest nights. On Sundays and early in the week the neighbourhood quiets considerably, though some venues remain open.

🚕 Getting back: Uber and InDriver are reliable in Casco Viejo after dark. The neighbourhood is safe within its core, but use a car service rather than walking to adjacent areas after midnight.

Rooftop bars — start here

No evening in Casco Viejo is complete without time on a rooftop. The peninsula setting means even low buildings get unobstructed views of the bay and the modern skyline — one of the great contrasts in the Americas. The window between 5:30pm and 7:00pm is when the light is at its best.

Tantalo Rooftop
Av. B · The benchmark rooftop
Rooftop

The most famous rooftop in Casco Viejo and still the best all-rounder. Creative cocktails, a DJ from 8pm on weekends, and views that take in both the bay and the cathedral towers below. Arrives at capacity by 6:30pm on Fridays — get there early or expect to wait.

Ego y Narciso
Calle 3ra Este · Quieter, best bay views
Rooftop

More intimate than Tantalo and with arguably the better view — directly over the bay toward the Pacific. Tiered seating means most tables have good sightlines. A better choice for couples or small groups wanting conversation over cocktails.

Live music and salsa

Casco Viejo has a small but vibrant live music scene anchored in a handful of venues that have become institutions. The sound is diverse — cumbia, salsa, jazz, and the African-influenced rhythms of the Congo tradition that Panama inherited from its Caribbean communities.

La Casona
Calle 9na · Live salsa Thursday–Saturday
Live Music

A restored colonial house with a large courtyard that hosts live salsa and Latin bands Thursday through Saturday nights. The dance floor fills with locals and tourists alike — it is one of the most genuinely fun and unpretentious places to spend an evening in Panama City. No dress code, $5–8 cover on weekends. Dance lessons are sometimes offered before the band starts.

Jazz Café Casco
Av. Central · Live jazz, wine, small plates
Jazz

A wine bar with a serious jazz program — live music most evenings from a rotating cast of Panamanian and visiting musicians. The room is small and the acoustics are excellent. The wine list is the best in the neighbourhood. This is the neighbourhood's most adult and low-key evening option — ideal for those wanting music without the volume of a club.

Late-night bars and clubs

After 10pm the crowd in Casco Viejo shifts. The tourist-heavy rooftop bars thin out and the neighbourhood's late-night regulars — locals in their twenties and thirties, expats, and nightlife-focused travellers — take over. The late-night options are concentrated on and around Avenida B and the streets running off Plaza Bolívar.

Club

Casco Viejo's most consistent late-night venue. It opens as a restaurant but morphs into the neighbourhood's closest thing to a proper club after 10pm on weekends — DJ sets, dancing, and a lively mixed crowd. It stays open later than almost anything else in the neighbourhood. Expect to pay a cover after midnight.

Opens 7pm, best after 10pm
Cover $10–15 after midnight
Vibe Energetic, dancing, late-night
Relic Bar
Calle 1ra · Craft cocktails, local crowd
Bar

A small craft cocktail bar that attracts a loyal local following. The bartenders are serious about their craft — this is where to go if you want an expertly made drink in a quieter setting. No dance floor, no DJ. Good conversation, well-made drinks, and a genuinely local atmosphere. Open until 2am most nights.

Practical tips for a night out in Casco Viejo

  • Start early, stay late: Sunset on a rooftop (5:30–7pm) → dinner (7:30–9pm) → live music or late bar (9pm onwards) is the ideal Casco Viejo evening arc.
  • Thursday is the local night: Locals tend to go out on Thursdays rather than weekends. If you want fewer tourists and a more authentic crowd, Thursday is the move.
  • Cash and cards: Most bars and restaurants accept cards. But carry some cash for cover charges and street food on the way home.
  • Stay within the core: Stick to the streets between Plaza Bolívar, Plaza de Francia, and Avenida B at night. Do not wander into the unrestored areas on the neighbourhood's northern edge after dark.
  • Uber home: Do not walk to hail a taxi on the street late at night. Use Uber or InDriver from within the venue.
  • Dress code: Smart casual gets you in everywhere. Flip-flops and beach shorts may be refused at Tantalo and Cosa Nostra after 9pm on weekends.
