Why Casco Viejo has the best rooftop views in Panama City
The geometry of Casco Viejo makes it unusually suited to rooftop bars. The neighbourhood sits on a low peninsula, which means that even a three- or four-storey building can offer unobstructed views of the bay in one direction and the skyscrapers of the financial district in the other. There is no other place in Panama City where you can stand between a 17th-century colonial ruin and a gleaming 50-storey glass tower — and from a rooftop, you can see both at once.
The best time to be on any Casco Viejo rooftop is between 5:30pm and 7:30pm — as the sun drops toward the Pacific, the light goes golden on the colonial facades below, and the modern skyline starts to illuminate. It is genuinely one of the great urban views in the Americas.
🌅 Sunset times in Panama: The sun sets between 6:00–6:30pm year-round (Panama is near the equator, so there's little seasonal variation). Arrive at your rooftop by 5:30pm to claim a good spot.
The best rooftop bars in Casco Viejo — ranked
1
Tantalo Rooftop Bar
Hotel Tantalo · Av. B · Best all-round
The original and still the benchmark rooftop bar in Casco Viejo. Tantalo has been operating since 2012 and defined what a Casco Viejo rooftop experience should be: creative cocktails, a DJ in the evenings, a relaxed atmosphere, and views that stop conversations mid-sentence. The cocktail menu changes seasonally and always features Panamanian spirits — the rum-based drinks are the best on the menu. Gets busy from 6pm on weekends; arrive early for the best corner spots.
Opens 4pm daily
Best for Sunset cocktails, date night, groups
Price $10–16 per cocktail
Music DJ from 8pm Fri–Sat
2
Ego y Narciso
Calle 3ra Este · Best views of the bay
A more intimate rooftop than Tantalo, with unobstructed views directly over the bay toward the Pacific. The seating is well-designed — tiered terraces that mean nearly every table has a good view — and the cocktail list leans toward Latin classics done well. Less of a party venue than Tantalo, which makes it better for conversation and a quieter sunset. The cheese and charcuterie board is worth ordering to go with your first round.
Opens 5pm daily
Best for Couples, small groups, quiet sunset
Price $9–14 per cocktail
Music Background only, no DJ
3
Cosa Nostra Rooftop
Near Plaza Bolívar · Best for late night
Cosa Nostra is primarily a restaurant with a rooftop bar that comes alive later in the evening — it's not a sunset spot, but rather a late-night destination. After 9pm on weekends, it becomes one of the livelier spaces in the neighbourhood, with a mix of locals and tourists and a music program that leans toward reggaeton and Latin dance. If you want to stay out late in Casco Viejo, this is where to end up.
Opens 7pm (bar only)
Best for Late-night, dancing, larger groups
Price $8–13 per cocktail
Music DJ / live from 10pm Fri–Sat
4
Canal House Terrace
Hotel Canal House · Best for hotel guests & privacy
The terrace bar of Hotel Canal House is technically accessible to non-guests but feels more exclusive — it's smaller, quieter, and less well-known to tourists. The views are excellent: directly toward the modern skyline, with the cathedral towers in the foreground. Best for a couple wanting a private cocktail away from the crowds. Reservations recommended.
Opens 5pm daily
Best for Couples, private events, hotel guests
Price $11–18 per cocktail
Music Background, occasional live jazz
5
Las Clementinas Terrace
Av. B & Calle 11 · Best local atmosphere
The terrace bar of Las Clementinas boutique hotel draws the most local crowd of any rooftop bar in the neighbourhood — artists, architects, journalists, and the young Panamanian professional class who live in and around Casco Viejo. Less focused on the tourist experience and more genuinely Panamanian. The drinks menu features interesting local spirits and fresh-squeezed fruit cocktails. This is the one our guides personally frequent on their days off.
Opens 5pm Tue–Sun
Best for Meeting locals, authentic atmosphere
Price $8–12 per cocktail
Music Background, occasional live music
Best way to end a Casco Viejo evening? Start with the rum tour.
Our rum tasting experience finishes near Tantalo — head straight from the tour to the rooftop.
Arrive before sunset: By 6pm on weekends, the best rooftops have a queue. Arrive by 5:30pm to get a table.
Weekdays are better: Monday–Thursday is significantly less crowded at every rooftop. You'll get better service, better seating, and the same views at a fraction of the weekend hassle.
Rum cocktails are the move: Panama has excellent local rum and most rooftop menus feature well-made rum-based cocktails. Avoid the international spirits where you can — the local options are more interesting and better value.
Minimum spends: Some bars have minimum spends at prime weekend tables. Ask before you sit down if this isn't displayed.
Dress code: Smart casual at most places. Tantalo and Cosa Nostra can get more dressed-up on weekend nights. Flip-flops and beach gear may be turned away at the more upscale venues after 8pm.
End your tour at a rooftop bar
Our evening rum tour finishes near Tantalo, so you can move seamlessly from the tasting into sunset cocktails. The two experiences complement each other perfectly.
