First — understanding "Panama City"
This question comes up often, and it makes sense: Panama City is spread across a long coastal strip and visitors are often based in different parts of the metropolitan area. When people ask how far Casco Viejo is from "Panama City", they usually mean: how far from wherever I'm staying?
The answer varies significantly depending on where you are. The city stretches roughly 25km east to west along the Pacific coast. Casco Viejo sits on a peninsula at the western end of the tourist zone, while most major hotels, the airport, and attractions like Miraflores Locks are spread out along the Corredor Sur highway.
Distances from key areas
| Starting Point | Distance | By Uber (no traffic) | By Uber (rush hour) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Miraflores (Financial District / Marbella) | 5–7 km | 15–20 min | 30–45 min |
| El Cangrejo / Bella Vista | 6–8 km | 15–20 min | 30–45 min |
| Albrook (bus terminal) | 4–5 km | 12–18 min | 25–35 min |
| Tocumen International Airport (PTY) | 26–30 km | 30–40 min | 50–75 min |
| Miraflores Locks (Canal) | 15–18 km | 25–35 min | 45–60 min |
| Amador Causeway | 5–7 km | 10–15 min | 20–30 min |
| Balboa (Canal Zone) | 6–8 km | 15–20 min | 25–35 min |
⚠️ Rush hour warning: Panama City traffic can be severe between 7–9am and 5–7pm on weekdays. The Cinta Costera coastal expressway helps, but the approach to Casco Viejo narrows and can back up significantly. Plan your timing accordingly.
Getting there — transport options
The easiest and most reliable way to reach Casco Viejo. Both Uber and InDriver (a local competitor that's often cheaper) operate widely in Panama City. Rates from the financial district run $4–8 depending on traffic. Drop-off is convenient — most drivers can get you to within a block of your destination.
Panama City has a modern, air-conditioned bus system that covers most of the city. From the financial district, buses run along the Cinta Costera toward Casco Viejo. The fare is $0.25 with a pre-loaded Metrobus card (available at Albrook terminal and many corner shops). The journey takes 20–35 minutes depending on traffic.
The Metro Line 1 does not reach Casco Viejo directly — the closest station is Cinco de Mayo, which is about a 20-minute walk from the entrance to the neighbourhood (or a short $3 Uber ride). This combination can work well from the eastern parts of the city but is not the most practical option for most visitors.
Technically walkable from the nearest parts of the financial district — about 5km along the Cinta Costera waterfront. The walk itself is pleasant along the coastal road. Not recommended in peak heat (11am–3pm) or at night. Allow 45–60 minutes on foot.
From Tocumen Airport to Casco Viejo
Tocumen International Airport (PTY) is 26–30km east of Casco Viejo — at the opposite end of the city. The journey by Uber takes 30–40 minutes in light traffic and up to 75 minutes in rush hour. Expect to pay $18–30 depending on the time of day and platform.
If you're arriving and heading straight to Casco Viejo, avoid rush hour if possible. Arrivals between 7–9am or 5–7pm on weekdays will hit serious traffic. Morning arrivals between 9am–12pm and evening arrivals after 8pm are typically smooth.
There are no direct bus connections between the airport and Casco Viejo — you would need to transit through Albrook bus terminal, which takes 1.5–2 hours total. Uber is strongly recommended for this journey.
Tips for getting around
- Download both Uber and InDriver before arriving. InDriver often has shorter wait times and competitive pricing, especially for longer distances.
- Tell the driver "Casco Viejo" or "Plaza Bolívar" — most drivers know the neighbourhood well and will navigate the narrow streets.
- The Cinta Costera is the coastal expressway that runs from the financial district to the edge of Casco Viejo. In light traffic it's fast. In rush hour it backs up considerably near the Casco Viejo exits.
- Parking inside Casco Viejo is extremely limited. If you rent a car, do not drive into the neighbourhood — park at the entrance near Av. de los Mártires and walk or Uber in.
- Once in Casco Viejo, walk. The neighbourhood is small and entirely walkable. The cobblestone streets are not suited to cars anyway.
