Best Hotels in Casco Viejo, Panama

Updated April 2026  ·  8 min read

Why stay in Casco Viejo?

Casco Viejo is Panama City's most atmospheric neighbourhood — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of cobblestone streets, crumbling colonial ruins, and colourful Art Deco facades. Staying here puts you walking distance from the city's best restaurants, rooftop bars, and cultural sites, and gives you access to the neighbourhood's golden hour light before the day-trippers arrive.

The neighbourhood is compact — roughly 10 by 8 blocks — so almost every hotel is within a few minutes' walk of the main plazas. The trade-off is that Casco Viejo is a lively neighbourhood, and some streets carry nightlife noise on weekends. Ask your hotel about room placement if you're a light sleeper.

💡 Location note: All hotels listed here are within Casco Viejo itself. Properties described as "Casco Viejo" on Booking.com sometimes sit outside the historic quarter — always check the map before booking.

Luxury & Boutique Hotels

Boutique Luxury
American Trade Hotel
From $220per night

The American Trade Hotel is the most celebrated property in the neighbourhood — a beautifully restored 1917 Art Deco building on Plaza Herrera. It has 50 rooms across four floors, a jazz club, a rooftop terrace, and a courtyard restaurant that's excellent even if you're not staying here. The rooms are large by Panama City standards, with high ceilings, hardwood floors, and quality linens. The staff are genuinely helpful.

It's the right choice if you want the definitive Casco Viejo experience and are happy to pay for it. Book direct or via Marriott Bonvoy — it's part of the Autograph Collection.

Casa Sucre Boutique Hotel
From $160per night

A small, intimate boutique hotel in a restored colonial building. Casa Sucre has 10 rooms, each individually designed, and a rooftop terrace with views toward the bay. The owners are involved in the day-to-day running, which shows in the level of personal attention. Breakfast is included and genuinely good — fresh fruit, local coffee, eggs made to order.

Better suited for couples and independent travelers than business guests. No pool, but the rooftop more than compensates on a clear evening.

Hotel Las Clementinas
From $145per night

Six large suites in a restored 1920s building on Avenida B. Las Clementinas is a favourite among writers and artists — quiet, thoughtfully designed, and run by people who love the neighbourhood. The suites have full kitchens, which makes it excellent for longer stays. The ground-floor restaurant (Rene Café) is one of the neighbourhood's best-kept secrets.

Not for guests who want a full-service hotel experience — there's no concierge, no pool, no gym. But for those who want to live in the neighbourhood rather than just visit it, this is the pick.

Budget-Friendly Options

True budget hotels within Casco Viejo itself are limited — the neighbourhood has gentrified significantly and property costs are high. For budget stays, most travellers either look at hostels in Casco Viejo (see our hostels guide) or stay in the nearby El Cangrejo or Marbella neighbourhoods, a 10–15 minute taxi or Uber ride away.

That said, Airbnb and apartment rentals in Casco Viejo can offer good value, especially for groups or for stays of 3+ nights. Several restored colonial apartments are available directly on Airbnb at rates that undercut the boutique hotels significantly.

Tips for booking

  • Book direct or via the hotel's own site where possible — Casco Viejo boutiques often offer better rates and extras (breakfast, late checkout) than OTA platforms.
  • Ask about weekend noise before you book. Some streets in Casco Viejo carry music and nightlife until 2–3am on Friday and Saturday nights. Inner courtyard rooms are quieter.
  • Check the actual map pin — some properties on Booking.com describe themselves as "Casco Viejo" but are a 20-minute walk from the historic quarter.
  • Parking is limited — if you're driving, confirm with your hotel in advance. Most guests arrive by Uber or taxi.
  • High season in Panama is December–April (dry season). Book boutique properties at least 4–6 weeks ahead during this period.
