Is it worth leaving the airport?
Yes — with the right amount of time. Panama City's Tocumen Airport (PTY) is a major Latin American hub, and many travellers pass through on connections between North America, South America, and Europe. Casco Viejo is one of the most extraordinary historic neighbourhoods in the Americas, and it is genuinely accessible from the airport.
The minimum useful layover for leaving the airport is 5 hours — this gives you 35–40 minutes each way for transport plus roughly 3 hours in the neighbourhood. With 6–8 hours, you can have a full and deeply satisfying Casco Viejo experience. Under 5 hours: stay at the airport (or consider the Amador Causeway, which is closer).
Do not miss your flight. Panama City traffic is unpredictable. Always budget 90 minutes to return to the airport, clear security, and reach your gate. Work backwards from your boarding time — not your departure time.
Getting from Tocumen Airport to Casco Viejo
- Uber: The easiest option. Open the app as you exit baggage claim — cars are typically available in 5 minutes. Cost: $18–28. Journey: 30–50 minutes depending on traffic.
- Official airport taxi: Fixed rates at the taxi counter inside arrivals. Approximately $25–35 to Casco Viejo. Reliable, slightly more expensive than Uber.
- Rush hour: 7–9am and 5–7pm see heavy congestion. If your layover falls during these windows, budget extra time for the journey.
- Luggage: Most Uber drivers and taxis can accommodate a carry-on bag. For checked luggage, either leave it at the airport (left luggage facilities available) or ask your driver before requesting the ride.
Luggage storage: Tocumen Airport has a left luggage facility near the arrivals hall. Rates are approximately $5–8 per bag per day. This lets you explore Casco Viejo without dragging your luggage through cobblestone streets.

Critical tips for layover visitors
- Reserve the walking tour before you land. It's free but it fills up. Book online so you're not scrambling the morning of your layover.
- Check if you need a visa. Tocumen Airport is in Panama, not an international transit zone. Most visitors from the US, EU, Canada, and UK can enter Panama visa-free for up to 180 days. Check your nationality's requirements before leaving the airport.
- Download Uber before you land. Having the app with a saved payment method ready means you're in a car within 5 minutes of exiting baggage claim.
- Keep an eye on traffic. Panama City can have severe congestion during rush hour. If your return window coincides with 5–7pm traffic, leave Casco Viejo earlier than planned.
- Wear comfortable shoes. Casco Viejo is all cobblestones. Airport attire (including trainers/sneakers) is perfectly fine for the neighbourhood.
