Casco Viejo from a Cruise Ship — Your Port Day Guide

By Casco Viejo Tours  ·  7 min read

Which port are you docking at?

Panama City has two main cruise terminals. Your logistics depend on which one your ship uses.

  • Balboa Port (Pacific side): Near the Panama Canal entrance. 15 minutes to Casco Viejo by taxi or Uber ($8–12). This is the most common port for Panama City calls.
  • Colón (Atlantic side): On the Caribbean coast, 80km from Panama City. Visiting Casco Viejo from Colón requires a 1–1.5 hour drive each way and is only practical if you have 8+ hours in port. Most visitors from Colón visit the Gatun Locks instead.

This guide is primarily for Balboa Port visitors. If you're docking in Colón, contact us for advice specific to that port.

Critical: Always allow at least 45 minutes to return to your ship. Traffic in Panama City can be unpredictable, and cruise ships do not wait. Build significant buffer into your return time — we recommend being back at port 90 minutes before departure.

Getting from Balboa Port to Casco Viejo

From Balboa Port, Casco Viejo is approximately 6km away — a 15-minute drive in normal traffic, 25–30 minutes in heavy traffic.

  • Uber: $8–12 each way. Open the app as you exit the port — cars are usually available within 5 minutes. This is the easiest, most reliable option.
  • Official port taxis: Available immediately outside the terminal. Negotiate the fare before getting in — expect to pay $15–25 each way. Agree on a return pickup time if you want the same driver to collect you.
  • Cruise ship shore excursion: If your cruise line offers a Casco Viejo excursion, it typically includes transport and a guide. More expensive ($60–100+) but completely stress-free — you'll never miss the ship.

Tip: Download the Uber app and add a payment method before you arrive in Panama City. This makes getting to and from Casco Viejo significantly faster than negotiating with taxis.

Can I visit both Casco Viejo and the Panama Canal in one port day?

Yes — if you have 6+ hours in port. The most efficient route is: Casco Viejo in the morning (8:30am–12:30pm) → Uber to Miraflores Locks (12:45pm, 20 minutes) → Miraflores Visitor Center (1pm–2:30pm) → Uber back to Balboa (2:45pm, 20 minutes).

Total Uber cost: approximately $30–40 round trip for all three stops. Miraflores entry: $15. Canal Museum: $5. This is entirely doable in a single port day and represents an extraordinary amount of Panamanian history in a few hours.

Critical tips for cruise visitors

  • Reserve the walking tour before you arrive. It fills up on cruise ship days. Book online in advance.
  • Know your all-aboard time and add 90 minutes. Traffic can double your return journey. Do not risk missing your ship.
  • Bring US dollars. Panama uses the US dollar (balboa). Cash is useful for small vendors, street food, and tips. ATMs are available in the neighbourhood.
  • Avoid the official port "tour buses" that charge $60–100 for a rushed drive-by. Walking tours from inside Casco Viejo give you a far better experience at a fraction of the cost.
  • Don't try to see everything. Doing two things well beats six things poorly. The walking tour plus one other experience (a good lunch, the Canal Museum, or the seawall) is the right amount for most port days.
  • Weather: Panama is tropical. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and a light layer if it's the rainy season. Walking tours run in light rain — only cancel in heavy downpours.
